The International Gas Union is a global association aimed at promoting the technical and economic progress of the gas industry.[1] It was founded in 1931.[2] It is registered in Vevey, Switzerland, and its secretariat is located in Oslo, Norway.[3][4][5]

The IGU has 78 full and 40 associated members in 71 countries. The members of IGU are national associations and corporations of the gas industry.[3] Its highest organ in the World Gas Conference, which takes place after every three years. The 25th World Gas Conference will be held in Malaysia in 2012.[3][6]

President of the Malaysian Gas Association Abdul Rahim Hashimhe acts as President of the IGU for 2009–2012 on behalf of the Malaysian Presidency.[5][7]

IGU's working organisation covers all aspects of the gas industry, including exploration and production, storage, LNG, distribution and natural gas utilisation in all market segments. IGU promotes technical and economic progress of the gas industry emphasising environmental performance worldwide.
